Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation, Collect for Kids partner for summer backpack drive

Program aims to reach over 50,000 local children in need

HERNDON, VA (July 21, 2015) — For the 4th year, the NWFCU Foundation has joined with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) as a credit union partner in the Collect for Kids program—working to supply the nearly 53,000 FCPS children who qualify for free or reduced price meals with items they need for a successful school year.

Backpacks are needed for children of all ages, and the suggested donation of $10 will fill a backpack with the supplies necessary to start the school year. Executive Director of the NWFCU Foundation, Linda Rogus, said the Foundation believes that investments in education are investments in communities.

“The NWFCU Foundation’s mission includes strengthening our community through youth outreach programs,” said Rogus. “Supplying our local area’s children in need with the tools to succeed in school has a positive impact on the children, their parents, and our community as a whole as they thrive and excel.”

The Foundation actively cultivates relationships with local organizations that support its mission and demonstrate a commitment to helping youth on an individual level, knowing that it doesn’t always take a large donation to make a substantial impact.

“It may not seem like much, but a contribution of even a single backpack can make a profound difference,” said Rogus. “It gives the child a symbolic fresh start to the school year and gives the parents a bit of relief from the financial pressure of purchasing supplies.”

The Foundation is accepting donations through September 3rd for the 2015 drive. Individual donors and businesses can drop off backpacks and monetary contributions at any Northwest Federal branch or go online to donate through the Foundation’s website.
