OnPoint encourages academic achievement at McLoughlin Middle School through college compass club

PORTLAND, OR (November 21, 2013) — OnPoint Community Credit Union recently donated $5,000 to support the College Compass Club (C3) at McLoughlin Middle School in Vancouver, WA. C3 provides tutoring, mentoring, and college readiness curriculum to 100 low income students at the school.

McLoughlin’s C3 curriculum teaches organization, study skills, and critical thinking that will help students as they continue their education. The program also bolsters a college-bound mentality by facilitating visits to college campuses, assisting students in researching colleges and careers, and providing firsthand accounts of college and career life. During the 2011-2012 school year, 100% of the students in the program improved by at least one letter grade in at least one class. Other benefits of the program include bolstered self-esteem, improved attendance, increased feelings of connectedness to their school, and an increase in the students’ excitement about college.

“OnPoint is proud to support this outstanding program,” said Rob Stuart, OnPoint’s president and CEO. “We were founded by teachers and are pleased we can continue to honor our roots by supporting tools that help these students succeed.”
