Open house celebration held for SECU family house at NHRMC

RALEIGH, NC (November 20, 2014) — State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) staff, local Advisory Board volunteers and SECU Foundation officials were among several hundred community leaders and supporters in Wilmington on Thursday to celebrate the opening of SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC).  The member-funded SECU Foundation first announced its support with a $2 million challenge grant in 2012 for the construction of the new facility in partnership with New Hanover Regional Medical Center, its Auxiliary and Foundation.  The 24-guest room hospitality house was open to attendees for an afternoon tour followed by a reception, during which time SECU Foundation Board Chair McKinley Wooten, Jr. presented SECU Family House at NHRMC with a check for $2 million on behalf of SECU members.

“We are the regional referral center for southeastern North Carolina and so many of our patients have traveled a long way from home to receive care here,” said Jack Barto, President and Chief Executive Officer of New Hanover Regional Medical Center.  “Thanks to the generous support of State Employees’ Credit Union members and our community, the expanded facilities at the new SECU Family House at NHRMC will allow us to accommodate more patients and families at a time when they most need the comforts of home.”

“SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a wonderful project that has the support of nearly two million SECU members who understand the significance and increased need for expanded hospitality house services in the Wilmington medical community,” remarked McKinley Wooten.  “The new facility will not only carry forth the excellent reputation of the Hospitality House of Wilmington that began over 27 years ago, but will offer even more patients and families a place of refuge with safe, comfortable accommodations and caring support services to help them rest and heal.”

Wooten added, “We are honored to be part of the SECU Family House – a project that demonstrates the compassionate and cooperative spirit of helping others, while making a positive impact on the social and economic welfare of patients, their families and North Carolina communities.”
