Growing Foundation To Increase Reach, Impact

WASHINGTON, DC (December 4, 2014)  Pentagon Federal Credit Union Foundation (PenFed Foundation) Programs Director, Mark Smith, joined the foundation’s staff today, bringing with him extensive experience in developing programs and partnerships to benefit military families. A seasoned leader and former Army combat arms officer, Smith previously served as executive director of Blue Star Families, the largest chapter-based military non-profit organization in the United States. In his new role, he will lead foundation programming, including the development and implementation of a comprehensive financial education and credit-building program to unite the foundation’s grant-making, direct service, and educational activities.

With more than 20 years of experience in government and nonprofit management, fundraising and marketing communications, Molly Schar joined the foundation as vice president of development and communications in August. Schar is responsible for planning and executing the PenFed Foundation’s fundraising and external relations activities, including providing strategic fundraising leadership, developing long-term strategies for revenue growth, strengthening the foundation’s relationships with donors, and growing the brand and market presence of the foundation. Schar previously held posts with the American Red Cross National Headquarters, World Council of Credit Unions, and National Credit Union Administration.

“We’re very fortunate to have Molly and Mark on the leadership team as we embark on a very exciting time here at the foundation,” said Jane Whitfield, PenFed Foundation president and CEO. “With Mark and Molly on board, we’re ready to dramatically increase the breadth and depth of our programming to impact tens of thousands of veterans and service members each year.”

The PenFed Foundation works with service members, veterans, their families and support networks to provide the skills and resources for our nation’s defenders to build a strong financial future. To make a donation or learn more about the foundation, visit www.penfedfoundation.org.
