People’s Credit Union commends North Kingstown High School students for their commitment to financial literacy

Financial Scholars Program provides innovative financial literacy platform for students

MIDDLETOWN, RI (May 23, 2014) — On Wednesday, May 21, People’s Credit Union, along with school officials, and representatives for the General Treasurer of Rhode Island, Gina Raimondo, recognized North Kingstown High School students for the completion of an innovative financial literacy program.

The Rhode Island Financial Scholars Program, sponsored by People’s Credit Union, utilizes the EverFiTM platform, an online program that teachers can use as a valuable financial literacy tool which can easily integrate with a school’s curriculum. The platform is aligned to state standards and consists of ten modules covering critical financial literacy topics such as budgeting, credit health/scores, insurance, student loans, mortgages, taxes, and saving and investing. People’s Credit Union currently sponsors several schools throughout the state, at no cost to the participating schools.

“I commend People’s Credit Union for their dedication to financial literacy in the classroom,” said Treasurer Gina Riamondo. “Programs like EverFi help to prepare Rhode Island’s youth for a successful future.”

“Since integrating Everfi within my finance and investments course curriculum here at North Kingstown Senior High School, I’ve experienced an improvement in our students’ financial vocabulary. This allows me to conduct lessons with students who are now more conversant in the topics of finance – and more inquisitive,” said Richard Garland, teacher at North Kingstown High School.

“Another way I use Everfi is in my own evaluation as part of the teacher evaluation process driven throughout Rhode Island.  My student learning objectives are tied to targets based on the percentage of students achieving financial literacy certification via Everfi”, also commented Richard Garland.

“Personal finance is one of the most important lessons we can teach today’s youth to help prepare them for the future.  We are so pleased we can help educate students on the importance of financial literacy through our Financial Scholars Program,” said Ellen Ford, President & CEO of People’s Credit Union.
