People’s Credit Union continues support for Newport Gulls’ FANatic About Reading program

Local students will be honored for their efforts with a Night at the Ballpark

MIDDLETOWN, RI (June 20, 2024) — For the 16th consecutive year, People’s Credit Union is sponsoring the Newport Gulls’ FANatic About Reading Program to promote the importance of reading for elementary school students on Aquidneck Island. The program gives Newport Gulls’ college athletes the opportunity to read books to children in their classrooms. As part of the program, players also hand out bookmarks and ask the students to read four books over the summer. On July 29th, at the Gulls’ final regular season game, People’s Credit Union will host FANatic About Reading Night at Cardines Field in Newport to honor the students for their accomplishments.

“Being a part of the FANatic About Reading team with the Newport Gulls is a highlight of our summer,” stated Courtney Hunter, Head of Community Development for People’s Credit Union. “It’s a treat to watch the players and their mascot, Gully, engage with the students on their turf, showing them that reading can be fun as well as educational.”

In all, the FANatic About Reading Program will reach over 3,000 students in 150+ classrooms on Aquidneck Island this year.
