San Diego County Credit Union is supporting a 5K run/walk that will raise money for crime tips

Proceeds from Crime Stoppers’ ‘Light the Night Against Crime 5k’ will fund cash rewards for crime-solving tips

SAN DIEGO, CA (October 17, 2014) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is supporting law enforcement efforts in San Diego as a sponsor of the San Diego County Crime Stoppers’ 28th annual “Light the Night Against Crime,” a 5k run/walk to be held Saturday evening, Oct. 25 in San Diego’s Balboa Park area.

The event, expected to draw about 3,000 participants, will raise funds for cash rewards that are paid to people who call, text or send tips to the Crime Stoppers tip line with information that leads to the arrest of suspects throughout San Diego County. Registration for the 5k begins at 5 p.m. with a kids run beginning at 6:15, followed by the walkers and runners starting at 7 p.m. The event ends at around 9:30 p.m. For more event information, visit sdcrimestoppers.org.

The San Diego County Crime Stoppers is a citizen-run, non-profit organization that partners with citizens, the news media and law enforcement to solve crime. It was established in 1984 by a group of concerned citizens seeking a safer community. Over the past 30 years, Crime Stoppers has helped local law enforcement solve more than 5,000 crimes, including homicides, rapes and robberies. Crime Stoppers also has helped apprehend more than 3,000 suspects.

Crime Stoppers’ proven strategies are simple. It operates an anonymous tip hotline, (888) 580-TIPS, where citizens can call with information on any felony crime or suspected criminal activity. Crime Stoppers is based on the principle that for every crime committed, someone has information to solve that crime.

“We are interested in our communities and are proud to serve such organizations as Crime Stoppers whose committed community supporters envision a safer San Diego,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “We applaud Crime Stoppers and their efforts, which combat three problems law enforcement faces in gathering information, including fear of reprisal, apathy and a reluctance to get involved.”

San Diego Crime Stoppers is just one of the more than 75 non-profit organizations and community events supported annually by SDCCU.
