San Diego County Credit Union returns as title sponsor of 2015 Walk MS

More than 8,000 people expected to walk toward a world free of MS April 19 and 25

SAN DIEGO, CA (April 17, 2015) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally owned financial institution, is returning as the title sponsor of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society’s 2015 San Diego County Credit Union Walk MSSM, to be held in San Diego on April 19 and 25.

“SDCCU is once again proud to support Walk MS and help rally the community to help in the fight against this devastating and relentless disease,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “Team SDCCU—a volunteer group made up of our customers, employees, friends and families who are passionate about making a difference—is looking forward to coming together over the next couple of weekends to join in the movement toward a world free of multiple sclerosis.”

SDCCU has supported Walk MS for over 16 years and has served as title sponsor since 2002, and in 2013, SDCCU was recognized for exceeding the $1 million mark in funds raised for the National MS Society. The two 2015 Walk MS events in San Diego will raise donations to benefit research, services and programs for people with MS.

The first SDCCU Walk MS will be held on Sunday morning, April 19 at the LEGOLAND® California Resort in Carlsbad. There, more than 4,000 people are expected to walk a 1.5-mile route through LEGOLAND California Resort. A second San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS will be held on Saturday morning, April 25 at NTC Park at Liberty Station in San Diego’s Point Loma area, where more than 4,000 people are expected to walk a three-mile route along San Diego Bay. Both events combined are targeted to raise more than $1 million in donations.

Now in its 25th year in San Diego, Walk MS events are known for drawing a large number of teams representing businesses, neighborhoods, clubs, community groups, churches and family members and friends of a person with MS. Many teams participate by selecting a team name and outfitting their members with costumes, including T-shirts, hats or balloons.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter serves more than 51,500 people affected by MS living in San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties, as well as the Hawaiian islands. Affecting more than 2.3 million people worldwide, MS is an unpredictable neurological disease that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the rest of the body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis, as well as blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue and cognitive deficits. These symptoms might be permanent, or they might come and go. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 children under the age of 18 also live with MS. Two to three times more women than men are diagnosed with the disease. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS.
