San Diego County Credit Union supports Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Great Strides walk

Walk proceeds benefit the Foundation’s aim to fight against the fatal genetic disease

SAN DIEGO, CA (May 29, 2014) — San Diego County Credit Union^® (SDCCU^®), San Diego’s largest locally owned financial institution, partnered with the San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to fight the fatal genetic disease of cystic fibrosis to serve as a sponsor of Great Strides, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s annual fundraising walk. Nearly 1,500 walkers turned out for the three-mile walk, which was held on Sunday morning, May 18, at De Anza Cove in San Diego’s Mission Bay area.

“SDCCU is proud to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s annual fundraising walk,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “Funds raised through Great Strides have helped spur dramatic progress in drug development and therapies for those with cystic fibrosis.”

The walk, which featured teams representing businesses, neighborhoods, clubs, community groups, churches and family members affected by cystic fibrosis, is expected to raise about $400,000 in donations. The event featured music, food, entertainment and activities for children.

Cystic fibrosis causes chronic lung infections and premature death. It affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States, and 70,000 people worldwide. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of a defective cystic fibrosis gene. Fifty years ago, most children born with cystic fibrosis died before reaching elementary school. Today, people with cystic fibrosis are living into their 30s, 40s and beyond. However, most individuals with cystic fibrosis battle lung disease throughout their lives.
