San Mateo Credit Union’s members mark International Credit Union Day by raising $10K for local food bank

REDWOOD CITY, CA (November 18, 2020) — San Mateo Credit Union encouraged members to use their SMCU debit and credit cards for a purpose on October 15, International Credit Union Day. For every use that day, SMCU pledged to donate 25 cents to Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley.

In all, SMCU members conducted nearly 40,000 debit and credit card transactions on October 15, resulting in a $10,000 donation to Second Harvest.

“ICU Day is a celebration of the credit union difference – of people helping people – and that is exactly what is needed to get our community through these unprecedented times,” said SMCU President and CEO Wade Painter. “This effort encompasses that sentiment through our members, who are supporting us as a local business, which in turn translates into support for local families in need this holiday season. We are honored to contribute to such an essential organization as Second Harvest.”

SMCU is committed to helping support local families and businesses, especially as we navigate the economic struggles created by the ongoing pandemic. Local nonprofits such as Second Harvest Food Bank have played a vital role in getting food and resources to families.

The $10,000 donation will help provide 20,000 meals for Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. That is a significant amount at any time, but especially now given the food insecurities caused by the pandemic.

“The food insecurity crisis in San Mateo County is not new, but since the pandemic hit, the need has grown dramatically, and Second Harvest is now providing double the amount of food to double the number of people,” Bacho said. “We are so grateful to the team at San Mateo Credit Union for their long-time commitment to hunger relief in San Mateo County that has spanned over 20 years. With so many people in need right now, the credit union’s support will help ensure that we can continue to provide nutritious groceries to the members of our community who need it most.”

SMCU is proud to partner with Second Harvest and other local organizations to support the residents of San Mateo County.
