Scott Credit Union, American Cancer Society raise $86,000 at Mardi Gras Ball fund raiser

EDWARDSVILLE, IL (May 2, 2014 — Scott Credit Union recently presented a $13,000 check to the YMCA of Southwest Illinois to continue its sponsor of the organization’s Partner with Youth Campaign, Y Cup Race Series, Backpack Attack, Healthy Kids Day, annual golf tournament, Splash Aquatics Safety Day, Jefferson Street Community Center in O’Fallon and Operation Kid Comfort.

The YMCA of Southwest Illinois includes the locations in Downtown Belleville, East Belleville, O’Fallon, Maryville, Monroe County and Red Bud.

Scott Credit Union Community Relations Supervisor Ashleigh Deatherage and SCU Community Relations Representative Lauren Hoefert presented the $13,000 check to YMCA of Southwest Illinois Interim CEO Jared Beard,

The YMCA Partner with Youth Campaign allows needy and disadvantaged children an opportunity to participate in Y programs. Contributions allow children a chance to learn positive character values while experiencing a variety of sports programs and challenge-education activities.

“This is another great opportunity for us to support our community and the people who live here,” Deatherage said. “It is our way of showing our support to the YMCA and the great programs that they provide.”

“Credit unions are really about helping people and this is a perfect way for us to take that even a step further,” she added.

The Y Cup Race Series is a series of 5k, 10k and 15k races that are designed to promote fitness and build community.

The YMCA Backpack Attack is a school supply drive that provides items to local kids in need.

Scott Credit Union has made giving back to its communities a major priority. The local credit union contributed over $325,000 and its employees volunteered over 2,400 hours to a variety of local civic efforts throughout the region in 2013.

“We realize that without our members and the communities in which we serve, we would not exist as a financial alternative,” Deatherage noted. “Supporting our communities is very important to us.”

The credit union has increased its community involvement in the past few years while also increasing its efforts to educate consumers of the value of doing their financial business with a not-for-profit credit union.

“We really want people in the area to know more about the value of doing business with a credit union,” she added. “That is why we have really focused our time on educating area residents about Scott Credit Union. One of the big ways we’ve done that is through our community involvement.”

“In times like these, people are really looking for ways to reduce expenses and save money,” Deatherage noted. “We are a great alternative that helps them to do that.”

Scott Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that is member owned. The recently gave about $1.3 million back to members through a bonus dividend and loan interest rebate.
