SECU once again prepares to help members save money at tax time!

RALEIGH, NC (January 8, 2015)  State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) tax preparers are ready to help members with their upcoming tax preparation needs.  Beginning January 20th, the Credit Union will once again offer two options for qualifying members – the no-cost Internal Revenue Service (IRS) sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and SECU’s own Low-Cost Tax Preparation service.  Tax preparers in all 254 SECU branches statewide will be able to complete and electronically file 2014 federal and North Carolina income tax returns for participating members.

The Credit Union’s seven-year partnership with the IRS to provide the no-cost VITA program as a volunteer public service continues to be successful in helping expand free tax services to members and North Carolina residents in all corners of the State.  Both VITA and the cooperative’s $75 flat fee tax preparation service have helped North Carolina taxpayers save nearly $50 million in tax preparation fees.

Becky Thomas of Fuquay Varina, N.C. is an advocate of SECU tax preparation services and shares her experiences.  “The Credit Union has been preparing my tax returns for the past three years and along with the great savings in fees, the process was easy and the experience has been totally positive.  SECU personnel are professional, knowledgeable and courteous, always putting me at ease.  I am comfortable asking questions and confident of their accuracy and helpfulness with preparing my tax returns.”

“Given the easy access, convenience and availability of providing both free and low-cost tax preparation services in all branches, SECU’s reach in assisting members continues to expand,” says Tenesha Carter, Senior Vice President of SECU Tax Preparation Services.  “In 2014, the Credit Union experienced a 17% growth in services from the previous year, filing over 90,000 tax returns that yielded taxpayers a savings of $11 million in fees.  Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated tax preparers, we look forward to making an even greater difference this upcoming tax season.”

Ms. Thomas adds, “I plan on using SECU’s tax preparation services again this year.  I highly recommend the service and feel fortunate to have it at my disposal!”
