Sharonview Federal Credit Union awards $20,000 in scholarship funds to six students from the Carolinas

FORT MILL, SC (June 25, 2015) – Sharonview Federal Credit Union awarded $20,000 in scholarship funds to six student members selected because of their superior academic and extracurricular achievements. The students were selected by a committee of Sharonview staff the Executive Leadership Team from applications across the United States.

The Sharonview Cares Scholarship, a scholarship open to all members, and the Sharonview Team Scholarship, a scholarship for children of employees, provided $20,000 in funds for the 2015-16 academic year to students pursuing higher education. The scholarship recipients are:

Morgan Wade of Cary, N.C., will attend the United States Naval Academy where she will be studying Computer Science and Spanish. In high school, she volunteered as a math tutor and in the nursery at her church and was involved in many activities including soccer, cross country and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Carol Nettles of Woodleaf, N.C., is currently a student at Mitchell Community college pursuing her Associate of Arts degree. She holds multiple leadership positions in the 4H Club in addition to being active in the Mitchell Running Club and Campus Impact, all while working up to 30 hours per week.

Joshua Youse of Wilmington, N.C., will attend Cape Fear Community College in the fall to pursue an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Josh is currently serving as a lead instructor for the National Center for Outdoor Adventure Education and as an afterschool group leader. He previously served as a resident advisor at Unity College, an instructor at surf clinics for Wounded Warriors and performed disaster relief and community enrichment projects with AmeriCorps.

Roxana Waits of Charlotte, N.C., will attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and study Business Marketing. She is involved in many activities including the American Marketing Association and the Finance Student Association. She also volunteers with Carolina P.A.W.S, a pet adoption agency, and the food pantry at St. Matthew’s Church in Charlotte.

Ben House III of Charlotte, N.C., is attending the University of North Carolina at Asheville where is he is studying Atmospheric Science and Computer Science. He is involved in many extracurricular activities including the American Meteorological Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Wesley Fellowship, church youth group and is also an Eagle Scout. Starting in the fall, he will work as a programming assisting where he will plan activities for an entire residence hall.

Kathryn Casteel of Inman, S.C., will be attending the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism in the fall to pursue her Master’s in journalism. She recently graduated from USC Upstate with a bachelor’s degree in communications. Kathryn worked for 2 years as a staff writer with The Carolinian and was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi honors society while working full-time throughout her undergraduate career.
