South Bay Credit Union participates in #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a natural fit for a credit union like South Bay Credit Union in Redondo Beach, Calif.

“Throughout the year we take part in various charity drives and activities,” said SBCU President/CEO Jennifer Oliver. “On Dec. 3, #GivingTuesday, we offered members some random acts of kindness and encouraged them to do the same, as well as promoted our toy drive with the local charity, Cheer for Children.”

The nationwide #GivingTuesday movement began in 2012. Organizers sought to establish a day to encourage charitable giving at the start of the holiday season, as an alternative to the consumer excess of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Throughout the day, SBCU spread cheer with some random acts of kindness and surprises for members. In addition, SBCU contributed toys for the Cheer for Children collection drive. SBCU recently finished a food drive to help the needy before Thanksgiving and is continuing to promote giving with a toy and food drive that will continue through December to help two local charities.

“We see ourselves as a community member,” said Oliver. “Credit unions are financial cooperatives, in essence “the little guy” and we know we can reach out and spread a little cheer, while encouraging our members to continue giving as they go about their days.”

Through various charity events through the year, SBCU can spotlight local charities, Oliver said. “Sometimes people just need to hear about a group that does good work and they are willing to pitch in.”

SBCU continues the spirit of giving with free professional photos with Santa on Saturday at its Torrance branch for members and their families.
