Space City charities raises more than $35,000 for scholarships with annual golf classic

(December 3, 2013) — Last month, Space City Charities hosted the 2013 Wolf Scholarship Golf Classic to raise funds to help deserving students achieve their goals of higher education. The tournament took place at Panther Trail Golf Course in The Woodlands, Texas, and was presented by title sponsors Space City Credit Union and S&W Energy Solutions, Inc.

The 2013 classic, held Nov. 11, exceeded all expectations. With a goal of $30,000 set in place from 2012, the 2013 edition was able to break through and raise more than $35,000 for new scholarships. Through sponsorship, donations and tournament fees, Space City Charities has leveraged a fun day out on the course as a way to change the lives of aspiring students.

When asked about the success of the tournament, Craig Rohden, CEO at Space City CU said, “We’re very grateful to our tournament sponsors and everyone who contributed to our success.”

Space City Charities established the scholarship to honor Verna Wolf, a retired board member for Space City Credit Union, for her commitment to the credit union movement and the philosophy of “people-helping-people.” In 2012, Space City Charities offered ten scholarships to both university and community college students. Due to the success seen in 2013, Space City Charities will be able to make an even bigger impact this year.

“When Verna retired we wanted to establish a permanent memorial to honor her name,” added Rohden. “The Wolf Scholarship will help people further their education and create a better educated community.  The scholarship is also a perpetual reminder of Verna’s giving nature and selfless attitude.”

Earlier this year, national personal finance website, GoBankingRates.com, recognized Space City Credit Union as one of twenty financial institutions nationwide for their strong impact in education in the local community. GoBankingRates.com specifically honored Space City CU’s sponsorship of the Verna Wolf Golf Classic. Casey Bond, managing editor of GoBankingRates.com, said, “Space City Credit Union goes above and beyond its mission of people helping people. The work the institution does through Space City Charities demonstrates how valuable not-for-profit credit unions are to not just their members, but entire communities.”
