United Federal Credit Union matches $10,000 for New Benton Harbor High School scoreboards

ST. JOSEPH, MI (March 28, 2014)  – United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) donated $10,000 in matching funds for two new gymnasium scoreboards to the Benton Harbor Athletic Booster Club, Benton Harbor, Mich. Located in one of Michigan’s struggling urban districts, Benton Harbor Area Schools does not have extra resources to fund special projects or make significant upgrades to existing facilities and equipment.

UFCU learned of the need to replace the outdated, improperly-working scoreboards from school leaders and athletic booster club members. The Credit Union helped energize the scoreboard initiative by pledging to match up to $10,000, half the cost of the new scoreboards, if community leaders, residents, alumni and businesses could raise the remaining funds.

“We were excited to take the lead on this campaign and help get it off the ground,” said United Federal Credit Union President/CEO Gary Easterling. “We believe in responding to initiatives that aim to improve the well-being of an entire community. Something as simple as new scoreboards in the gymnasium will instill pride in Benton Harbor’s athletes, students and fans. Often, athletic programs at struggling school districts play a pivotal role in keeping kids off the streets and teaching them invaluable life skills.”

The new scoreboards were officially unveiled at Benton Harbor High School’s Don Farnum Gymnasium on Thursday, March 27, as the community celebrated receiving the state runner up title at the MHSAA boys basketball Class B championship game on March 22.

“We are extremely grateful to United Federal Credit Union for the support they have given the students, parents and alumni of Benton Harbor,” said Benton Harbor Athletic Booster Club President Marty Mason. “Every time our athletes step onto that court, they will have a tangible reminder of the great things that can be accomplished when you have great teammates to help you reach your goals.”

With 22 branches in six states, UFCU strives to build strong communities in every region it serves.
