Unitus Community Credit Union awards scholarships to 11 students

PORTLAND, OR (July 7, 2014) — Unitus Community Credit Union is pleased to announce the winners of its 2014 scholarship program. Each year, Unitus awards 11 scholarships of $1,000 each to high school graduates, college undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to community service and a desire to pursue higher education.

“The cost of a college education continues to rise, and our scholarship program is one way we help make higher education more affordable for our young members and their families,” said Unitus President and CEO Patricia Smith. “Though we could only choose 11 scholarship winners, we were impressed with the outstanding applications submitted to our selection committee, and wish all our students success in their future endeavors.”

The credit union’s scholarship program began in 2004, and has awarded financial assistance to 105 students totaling more than $100,000. This year, an independent scholarship committee of education specialists reviewed and selected recipients based on financial need, academic achievement, community involvement, the quality of the applicant’s essay and a commitment to pursue post-high school education.

Recipients of Unitus’ 2014 scholarship program include:

  • Jacob Mallery of Spokane
  • Nicolas Alvey of Portland
  • April Stephenson of Beavercreek
