UVA Community Credit Union awards $34,500 to area high school seniors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA (July 13, 2022) — UVA Community Credit Union announces the 2021-2022 recipients of its annual scholarship program. Twenty-three high school seniors were awarded $1,500 each.

“Education is something you carry with you for a lifetime. That’s why we feel it is so important to give graduating high school seniors a head start in college through the Credit Union’s Local High School Scholarship program,” said Jeffrey C. Moscicki, the chairman of the Credit Union Board of Directors.

Scholarship submissions were open to students from area public high schools, private schools, alternate schools, and homeschooled students who reside in the following counties: Albemarle, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Buckingham, Campbell, Culpeper, Cumberland, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Highland, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, Rappahannock, Rockbridge, and Rockingham; and the cities of: Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Staunton, and Waynesboro.

The application process required an essay to be submitted on the topic “Young adults without much experience are often targets of financial scams and fraud. What advice would you give your peers to help them avoid being the victim of one of these common scams targeting teens and young adults?” Many of the essays outlined examples of how scams and fraudsters had previously impacted them directly and/or someone close to them. These examples demonstrated the importance of educating our community and future generations about this important topic.

Part of UVA Community Credit Union’s mission is to build a stronger community by providing responsive financial solutions that enrich the lives of our members. To accomplish this mission, the Credit Union places an emphasis on education by offering a variety of free community education seminars and through this high school scholarship program.

Scholarship recipients will be recognized during the Credit Union’s Annual Meeting for its members on July 27, 2022.
