Walton High School senior Colin Humble is top Georgia United CU 2014 scholarship recipient

MARIETTA, GA (April 22, 2014) —  Georgia United Credit Union is excited to announce the winners of their 2014 scholarship programs.  A total of $12,500 was awarded and disbursed to thirteen high school seniors through the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship program and the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship program.  Thanks to all the high school seniors who entered this year’s competition as we had a record number of entries!

This is the 20th year that Georgia United has given the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and the 7th year for the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship. A total of approximately $142,500 has been awarded to high school seniors during the tenure of both programs.  Recipients are chosen based on an essay competition with consideration given to academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in both school and community activities.  The top winners for 2014 were Colin Humble of George Walton Comprehensive High School and Joseph Long of Loganville High School, respectively.

Colin Morgan Humble, Marietta, GA – First Place Vernon E. Carne Scholarship Winner

Colin Morgan Humble was this year’s first place winner of the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and recipient of $3,000. He will attend the University of Notre Dame as Georgia’s first ever Hesburgh-Yusko Scholar.  (Hesburgh-Yusko www.hesburgh-yusko.org is Notre Dame’s Community Service Scholarship.) Colin is a Scholar Athlete with a 4.66 weighted GPA, co-captain of the Walton Cross Country and Track and Field teams, an officer of Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society as well as in Cobb Youth Leadership. He is also an active volunteer on mission trips with his church, Catholic Church of St. Ann’s.  Colin is the son of Clark and Patti Humble of Marietta.

Joseph Michael Long – Loganville, GA – First Place John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship Winner

Joseph was this year’s first place winner of the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship and recipient of $1,500. Already accepted to the University of Georgia, Joseph has a 4.00 GPA and is an AP Scholar with Honors. He is President of the Student Government Association, Vice President of the Beta Club. Senior Class Treasurer, a member of the Beta Club and volunteers at his church, St. Oliver’s. He is the son of Michael and Laurie Long of Loganville.
