AmFirst presents Academic Leader Award at 2025 Minority Business Awards

Dr. Carolyn Russell-Walker of Ramsay High School named honoree

BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 19, 2025) |

AmFirst was honored to present the Academic Leader Award at this year’s Minority  Business Awards, hosted by SummitMedia on Thursday, May 8, at The Club. This prestigious recognition was  awarded to Dr. Carolyn Russell-Walker, principal of Ramsay High School, for her exceptional leadership and  unwavering dedication to academic excellence.

Dr. Russell-Walker was selected as this year’s honoree through a public voting process online for her commitment  to uplifting students and creating lasting impact in the Birmingham community.

“Never in a million years did I imagine being honored for something that feels so deeply ingrained in my daily walk,”  said Dr. Russell-Walker. “I don’t do this work for recognition—but clearly, the voters saw something meaningful,  and for that, I am beyond grateful.”

AmFirst President and CEO Kevin Morris, who presented the award, shared his thoughts: “Dr. Russell-Walker is  the kind of leader who not only sets high standards for academic achievement but also changes lives through her  passion and purpose. It was an honor to recognize her incredible contributions on behalf of AmFirst.”

Now in its 19th year, the Minority Business Awards celebrate the achievements of minority business and  community leaders across Birmingham. Since its founding, the initiative has honored over 550 leaders and  presented more than 167 awards.

AmFirst is proud to support this event and recognize leaders building brighter futures through education, service,  and community engagement.
