Houghton, MI (March 30, 2026) |
April is National Financial Literacy Month, and Breakwater Federal Credit Union is celebrating with several hands-on events designed to build confidence and real-world money skills for all ages.
Breakwater will kick off the month with its second annual Financial Literacy Month Bingo, where members can complete a variety of activities designed to support their financial well-being and build strong money habits. Bingo cards will be available in the lobby and online and completed cards can be returned by the end of the month for a chance to win cash prizes.
On April 2, Breakwater will host its second annual Financial Reality Fair at L’Anse High School. This year, students from Baraga High School will also attend, expanding the event’s reach to more students across Baraga County. The Financial Reality Fair gives students a chance to step into real-life financial scenarios where they must make financial decisions about housing, transportation, and everyday expenses while managing a monthly budget. Additionally, Breakwater will host its third annual Financial Reality Fair for juniors and seniors at Houghton High School on April 7, continuing its efforts to equip local students with practical, real-world financial skills.
On April 8, Breakwater and Michigan Tech’s GEAR UP and TRIO Pre-college programs will be hosting an all-new Bright Futures Fair at the Hancock Community Hub. This free event is open to all Copper Country ISD high school students and their families. Families can stop by anytime between 6 and 8PM and participate in a myriad of activities designed to help students prepare for academic and financial success. Students can try out Breakwater’s new Entrepreneurship Simulation, attend drop-in tutoring sessions with Tech Tutors, and learn practical organization and study strategies at the TRIO Study Skills table. Activities for younger children will be available, making this a fun and engaging experience for the whole family.
Families are encouraged to join us for special story time sessions at the Portage Lake District Library on April 8 at 10:30AM and April 9 at 1:30PM. Breakwater staff will read How do you spend? by Cinders McLeod, followed by hands-on activities designed to accompany the book. Books were provided by Michigan Credit Union Foundation as part of the $mart Money Kids Read program, and a limited number of books will be available for families to take home.
On April 15, Breakwater will be at the Keweenaw Bay Ojibway Community College Job Fair and Career Expo, connecting with students and community members to share information about careers in the financial industry. We will also have free financial literacy resources on hand for attendees to take with them.
Breakwater is excited to host its second annual Money Matters: Fun with Finance for Kids event at the Portage Lake District Library on April 20, starting at 4:30PM. This interactive event is geared toward elementary and middle school students and invites children to rotate through a series of activity stations, where they complete tasks to earn play money. Once they have earned enough, they can visit the Breakwater Prize Store to purchase real prizes with their earnings.
Later in the month, Breakwater will host an adult-focused financial game night at Small Craft in Hancock, offering a fun and interactive way to build financial knowledge. This event is still in the planning stages and more details will be announced at a later date.
Financial Literacy Month provides a meaningful opportunity to connect with our community and support individuals at every stage of their financial journey. By offering interactive and accessible experiences, we hope to empower community members with the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions.
