The Florida Credit Union Association, an affiliate of the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates (LSCU), has named Representative Shevrin Jones (D-West Park) as its 2017 State Lawmaker of the Year. Rep. Jones has been a longtime supporter of credit union initiatives.
In 2017, Rep. Jones sponsored legislation that exempted credit unions from regulation and lawsuits under the Florida Deceptive & Unfair Trades Practices Act. Credit unions were the only highly regulated industry not included in the exemption, and this bill adds protection from frivolous lawsuits. Rep. Jones went above and beyond to move this important measure through the legislative process and was ultimately successful when the Governor signed it in to law. In addition to sponsoring priority legislation of the FCUA, Rep. Jones has consistently supported credit union friendly legislation during his time at the Capitol and is always accessible to credit union advocates.
“Representative Jones has served credit unions in Florida as a true champion,” said Patrick La Pine, president/CEO of the LSCU. “He has sponsored legislation to include credit unions in an exemption under the Florida Deceptive & Unfair Trade Practices Act and understands the critical role that credit unions play in Florida’s economy and in serving Floridians throughout the state.”
The Florida Credit Union Association honored Rep. Jones on January 30, 2018 in Tallahassee during the Florida Advocacy Conference where he addressed credit union leaders gathered to help promote the credit union movement at the state’s capitol.
