First Financial Federal Credit Union of MD awards $153,000 in scholarships

First Financial Federal Credit Union of Maryland has awarded 51 deserving high school students with $3000 college scholarships totaling $153,000.  Recipients were formally congratulated at the organization’s 65th Annual Meeting on Thursday, April 19.

“We are honored to recognize these deserving scholarship recipients. Education is the heart and soul of First Financial Federal Credit Union. We are privileged to play a role in funding these diligent students’ efforts toward scholastic advancement, at the same time, lessening the burden on family finances,” said President and CEO Eric Church.

First Financial FCU has a long-standing partnership with Baltimore and Carroll County Public Schools, as well as many area private schools. Dedicated to youth financial literacy, the credit union spends hundreds of hours in the classroom teaching personal finance skills, and operates several student-run branches. Scholarships were also made available to existing members who attend schools outside of our field of membership.

Applicants were asked to write essays, submit references, list school and community activities, and have a 2.5 minimum GPA.  Finalists were selected by the credit union’s volunteer Scholarship Committee. Since the programs’ inception in 1998, the credit union has awarded 500 scholarships totaling more than $1.5 million dollars.
