Harrisburg Academy and PSECU partner to support student needs, create youth financial education opportunities

Yesterday, Harrisburg Academy, Harrisburg’s only independent school serving students preschool through 12th grade, and PSECU, Pennsylvania’s largest credit union, signed a first-of-its-kind agreement that will help support student needs and create youth financial education opportunities.

“This partnership is such a natural fit,” said Harrisburg Academy Head of School Jim Newman. “The Academy was founded in 1784 by John Harris, Jr., in a room of his mansion, with an intent to provide an excellent educational opportunity for children living in the newly established town of Harrisburg.  Now 235 years later, we strive to prepare our students with the tools to successfully meet the challenges of an interconnected global society. PSECU, too, has a rich history of connection, excellence, and innovation — I am certain their educational programming and scholarship support will have a profound impact on Academy students.”

“We at PSECU follow the credit union ‘people helping people’ philosophy,” said PSECU President Greg Smith. “As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, everything we do is done with our more than 430,000 members’ best interest in mind. That includes building a strong, healthy, and vibrant community for everyone to enjoy… and education is a key component. We are pleased to join with Harrisburg Academy in working to achieve that goal.”

In addition to PSECU membership eligibility for the entire Harrisburg Academy community – students, staff, faculty, and family - through the five-year agreement, PSECU will provide Harrisburg Academy with financial education resources, and $15,000 in scholarship assistance.

“PSECU has had a strong and ever-growing presence on college and university campuses across Pennsylvania for more than 15 years, but this new venture will allow us to start outreach to children at a younger age when they are really starting to learn the building blocks of financial success,” explained Barb Bowker, Vice President of Marketing and Membership Development for PSECU. “We truly hope that our financial education resources and scholarship funding are of great benefit to the learning process of Harrisburg Academy students. We’re very excited about this initial opportunity and invite other schools that may be interested in collaborating with us on similar programs to reach out.”
