Five area students win scholarships from Crosspoint Federal Credit Union

Students with area ties will head back to school this year with scholarship help from Crosspoint Federal Credit Union. $6,000 in scholarships were awarded to five college bound students month. The winners were Crosspoint members or had a direct family member who belongs to the Hamden based credit union.

This year the $2,000 Dennis Banks Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of former Credit Union President/ CEO Dennis Banks, was awarded to Maya Gant of New Haven. Maya will be attending Dominican College in New York.

The winners of the General Scholarship were Jackson Tubis and Abagail Tubis of North Haven who are attending School of Visual Arts and Syracuse, respectively. Jonathan Opramolia of North Haven who is attending University of Connecticut and Sierra Talavera-Brown of Guilford who is attending Emory University. Each General Scholarship winner will receive $1,000.

To be considered for a scholarship the Students were asked to complete an application, list their extracurricular activities and write an essay explaining the significance of their major in today’s society. A volunteer committee reviewed the applications and selected five winners from the candidates. Scholarships were open to all high school seniors, who will be full-time; degree-seeking students enrolled at a U.S. accredited college or university or a current college freshman, sophomore or junior.
