San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), is proud to celebrate the 2022 Lunar New Year. SDCCU customers who celebrate the Lunar New Year can pick up red envelopes in SDCCU branches or digitally send red envelopes to family and loved ones through Bill Payer Plus® in Internet Branch online banking. To find instructions on how to send your red envelopes through Bill Payer Plus, please visit sdccu.com/lunarnewyear. The Lunar New Year is February 1, 2022 and this year is the Year of the Tiger.
Based on the lunar calendar, the Lunar New Year takes place on a different date each year. Traditionally, red envelopes are given to children by their parents or elder family members wishing them health and good studies in the coming year. The red envelopes (traditionally known as hong bao or lai see) always have money enclosed, typically new bills, and are believed to bring good luck.
Each year of the 12-year cycle is represented by a Chinese zodiac animal and characteristics are associated with each zodiac birth year. The tiger is a symbol of strength and people born in the Year of the Tiger are seen as confident and courageous.
