UMCU creates Year in Review of charitable efforts in community

The University of Michigan Credit Union, UMCU, released its first community impact infographic and video, highlighting its charitable donations, philanthropic initiatives, educational efforts, and sponsorships over the course of 2021.

Titled, “UMCU Gives Back 2021”, UMCU underscores its dedication to the communities it serves through financial education, local campaigns, university partnerships, social programs supporting art, K-12 schools, and literacy, as well as donations to local charities and continued service to local businesses in the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Flint, Dearborn, and Saline communities.

“Community, to me, means recognizing the greatness in each individual and recognizing that each individual brings something to the greater whole which makes us better,” said UMCU’s President and CEO, Tiffany Ford.

In total, UMCU gave back through 184 financial education workshops and activities, reaching over 4,000 people, and launched a new scholarship program for high school seniors.

Through its philanthropic efforts, UMCU team members volunteered 3,125 hours and donated school supplies, toys, gifts, comfort items, and funds to deserving charities and causes.

Its sixth annual Shop Local Give Local campaign resulted in $355,572.42 kept in the local economy during the holiday season through members using UMCU credit cards at local businesses. UMCU partnered with 100 local business vendors in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Flint, Dearborn, and Saline to donate $5,000 to SOS Community Services.

The credit union also donated $70,980 to university partner events and programs, $55,833 as part of its $1.5 million endowment to Arts Adventures, $15,100 to local businesses, $46,900 to local charities, $6,775 to K-12 schools and literacy programs, and $9,900 to art programs.

“I see a partnership with UMCU as such an important part of community because UMCU is such an integrated and grounded part of the community. Without UMCU’s support, the museum couldn’t offer sustained programs,” echoed Christina Olsen, Director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
