Nymeo Federal Credit Union, a community-based credit union serving Frederick and Montgomery Counties, awarded over $5000 in scholarships to students in the community. The scholarships were awarded through Nymeo’s annual scholarship program, the Believe & Achieve College Scholarship, and Frederick County Public School’s (FCPS) Start-Up Frederick Competition.
Hannah Clagett, recent graduate of Oakdale High School in Frederick, and Shannon Maguire, recent graduate of Tuscarora High school in Frederick, were this year’s recipients of the Nymeo Believe and Achieve College Scholarship. A committee of judges based the two winners on essays, academic accomplishments and participation in school and community activities. The students each received a check for $1,500.
“Since the inception of this scholarship program in 2015, we have seen an increase in applications,” said Nymeo’s President and CEO Vicki Johnston. “Each year, our judges have a tough time in selecting the two winners. This year was one of the most difficult! We congratulate all graduating seniors and wish them the best of luck.”
Aside from the credit union’s annual scholarship, Nymeo again participated as a sponsor and judge of FCPS’ Start-Up Frederick, a competition similar to the television show, Shark Tank. Held virtually, Start-Up Frederick gave students an opportunity to highlight inventions, ideas, and business plans. The achievement awards, presented by Nymeo, ranged from $50 to $900.
“The inventions were amazing and each of the student-inventors did a wonderful job presenting,” said Kristina Morgan, Nymeo’s Chief Operations Officer. “Nymeo was happy to be a part of this competition, which provides students a unique opportunity to develop ideas and products and hone their entrepreneurial skills.”
