Northwest credit union leaders welcomed an opportunity to meet in Olympia last week with Todd Harper, recently sworn in as a Director on the three-person board of NCUA. Rep. Denny Heck, (D-Wash.) helped to facilitate the meeting, and Washington State Employees CU (WSECU), Olympia, Wash. hosted the event.

“Nearly every credit union with a presence in Congressman Heck’s district attended and we had a very informative dialogue,” said John Trull, vice president of regulatory advocacy, Northwest Credit Union Association. “We appreciate WSECU for hosting our colleagues, and Congressman Heck and Director Harper for the opportunity.”

During the meeting, Heck presented a letter signed by many of his Northwest colleagues in Congress. It urges NCUA to make a rule change that will allow credit unions to better serve 1.3 million military service members and their families in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

“Our service members serving abroad deserve to benefit from the additional products and services that are offered by low income designed credit unions, including greater opportunities to obtain a business loan,” the letter stated.
