$15,000 for local students as Unitus announces 2019 scholarship winners
Unitus rewards excellence in learning and community engagement with scholarship grants for six local students.
TIGARD, OR (August 13, 2019) — Unitus has announced their six scholarship winners for the upcoming school year. Each of these local hard-working students has demonstrated a commendable dedication to learning and serving their communities.
“Promoting education is a pillar of our mission at Unitus as a lifechanging key to creating a stronger, more prosperous future here in our communities,” said Unitus Community Development Manager Aimee Berg. “We are honored to help these outstanding students complete their educational goals and build a brighter future in their own unique and extraordinary ways.”
Unitus’ scholarship program has awarded more than $250,000 to local students since 2004. Scholarship applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available in January 2020.
These are the 2019 recipients of the Unitus Community Credit Union Scholarship awards:
Norah Glynn, Lincoln High School – Served as the President of Amnesty International and Co-President of the Environmental Justice Club. Glynn also volunteers her time building homeless shelters with Portland Family Housing and serving food through People in the Park. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at American University, she plans to further her education and become a human rights lawyer.
Tyanna Hoang, Century High School – Currently dedicates her time to bringing smiles to patients at Kaiser Permanente Westside Medical Center, as part of her personal goal to volunteer at least once a week. Her passion for science and helping others makes a career in Neuroradiology a natural fit, which she plans to pursue at the University of California, Davis. Additionally, Hoang dreams of traveling abroad to teach math and English to children overseas.
Edwin Lee, Westview High School – Is currently in the process of obtaining his Pharmacy Technician certification and plans to become a cardiologist. After completing his studies in Biology at the University of Washington, he dreams of establishing his own practice, conducting his own research on cardiac regeneration and continuing his volunteerism with organizations like Doctors Without Borders and Medical Teams International.
Cat Luna, University of Oregon – Enters her Junior year in Eugene as a Psychology major. A mother of three and self-taught graphic designer, Luna spends much of her time improving her community through Head Start and The Better Kids Club. Her passion for education and helping others motivates her to pursue a career as a mental health counselor as she continues to work with non-profit organizations that speak to her heart.
Sally Nguyen, University of Oregon – Enters her Sophomore year in Eugene with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Advertising, and a minor in Art. Nguyen is heavily involved on campus, serving as the Events Intern for the Women of Color Coalition and Digital Content Director for The Siren, a student-run feminist magazine. After graduating, Nguyen plans to start her own apparel brand to support women, using fashion as a platform to give back to organizations that empower women of color and immigrants.
Nicolle Swanson, University of Oregon – Enters her Junior year in Eugene as a double major in Human Physiology and Psychology. Swanson has amassed more than 2,000 volunteer hours giving back to her community through Girl Scouts of the USA. She’s helped organize numerous food drives, fundraisers and blood drives, and works with youth in lacrosse and basketball clinics. After she graduates, Swanson’s goal is to be a Physician’s Assistant at OHSU Doernbecher, helping to treat children diagnosed with cancer.
Special Thanks: Finally, Unitus Community Credit Union was honored to receive a scholarship from their private education lending partner Credit Union Student Choice to help credit union members pay for college.
This special one-time award of $1,000 was given to Portia Perkins from Gresham High School. Perkins is attending Portland State University, majoring in Applied Health & Fitness with a minor in Business Administration. An athlete herself, Perkins has played softball for over ten years and continues her involvement with the sport as Student Manager at PSU. Her goal is to obtain a Personal Training certification and Master’s degree in Public Health, to ultimately start her own business.
