1st Advantage Federal Credit Union joined the fight to take childhood back from cancer

St. Baldrick’s Foundation event to raise money for lifesaving cancer research

On September 14, 2019 1st Advantage colleagues elected to “rock the bald” for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation; a volunteer driven charity that has become the number one charitable funder of childhood cancer research grants in the world. Men and women from across Hampton Roads chose to shave their heads and show that bald is beautiful, all to raise funds for childhood cancer research. 1st Advantage is proud to announce that the inspiring event raised over $20,000 to aide in the fight to take childhood back from cancer. 1st Advantage has hosted two other Raise to Shave events over the years raising a combined total of over $100,000 toward childhood cancer research.

Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes. In the U.S., one in five kids diagnosed will not survive. According to a new study supported by St. Baldrick’s, more than 99% of survivors will have a chronic health problem, and 96% will have severe or life-threatening conditions as a result of the intense treatments and/or the cancer itself. With only 4% of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle to find a cure and provide survivors with the quality of life that they deserve. 1st Advantage is honored to join the fight with St. Baldrick’s.
