CHICAGO, IL (September 25, 2025) |
Alliant Credit Union partnered with the national nonprofit PCs for People to host an electronics donation drive at their Chicago headquarters, collecting 7,084 pounds of retired laptops, desktops and other electronic equipment.
The drive engaged Alliant employees, members and community partners to contribute devices that will be refurbished and redistributed to families and individuals in the Chicago area who lack access to reliable technology. The initiative aims to help create digital opportunities and expand access to education, employment, and connectivity. This year’s drive was the first under Alliant’s new CEO, Mike Dobbins.
“As a nonprofit, part of our mandate is to give back, and we do that through our financial products, but it's also important to do that through our human efforts and the efforts of the foundation,” Dobbins said. “Partnering with PCs for People allows us, as a digital credit union, to put the tools of technology directly into people’s hands and connect those who need it most to essential internet access.”
PCs for People specializes in refurbishing retired technology and distributing it at low or no cost to individuals living below the poverty level. The organization also offers affordable internet services to help recipients participate in today’s digital economy.
The partnership between Alliant and PCs for People includes ongoing collections beyond the recent drive. A dedicated PCs for People truck regularly visits Alliant’s headquarters to gather retired equipment throughout the year. These collections help ensure surplus technology is reused rather than discarded.
The initiative also supports Alliant’s sustainability goals. By diverting thousands of pounds of electronics from landfills and placing them back into circulation, Alliant contributes to reducing electronic waste and promoting environmentally responsible practices.
“Lacking access to a computer and the internet can be a barrier to education, employment and skill development,” said Loren Williams, enterprise partnership manager at PCs for People. “Through our partnership, we can take these things so many of us take for granted and connect them with those in need to better themselves and future generations”.
The donation drive reflects Alliant’s commitment to digital opportunity and its role as a socially responsible financial institution.
