Blue Eagle Credit Union Soars Into The Community

ROANOKE, VA (May 30, 2013) The Blue Eagle Credit Union name and logo are new, but the credit union isn’t a new player in the local financial community.  Blue Eagle Credit Union has roots dating back to 1948 when a group of United States Postal Service (USPS) employees pooled their money to create Roanoke Postal Employees’ Federal Credit Union. For more than 60 years, USPS employees and their families throughout Southwest and Central Virginia have enjoyed doing business with their credit union for the full range of financial services, financial strength, and genuine family style atmosphere offered by their credit union.

Though the credit union has continued to grow and remains financially strong, the downsizing of local USPS facilities and employee base prompted the credit union’s volunteer Board of Directors, consisting of USPS employees and retirees, to consider an expanded field of membership. This visionary strategic decision positions the credit union to sustain their financial stability and to serve their members for many more generations.

“At our 62nd Annual Meeting last October, an overwhelming majority of votes was cast by our members in favor of conversion from a federal to a state charter,” said credit union CEO Jeff Thompson. “Our new charter allows us to now serve the entire communities of the greater Roanoke and Lynchburg areas, where we have strong and established presences in the marketplace. Additionally, the new community charter dictated a new name and logo with a more universal appeal.”

“The Blue Eagle Credit Union name proudly infers our Postal heritage, yet still connects in a different way with our newer segment of members without any Postal affiliation,” Thompson added. “Far from being a move away from our roots, this change is a proactive step towards becoming a better partner with existing members and the communities we serve.”

So, you may have made the connection that the eagle is a symbol representing the credit union’s Postal legacy, but why is it blue?  Blue is also a color associated with the credit union’s Postal heritage; however, a blue eagle is something unique and unexpected – which fits perfectly with the credit union’s brand.

Serving the greater Roanoke and Lynchburg areas, Blue Eagle Credit Union is a community chartered credit union with roots dating back to 1948.  With a Vision of Enriching Lives and a Mission of Delivering Solutions, Blue Eagle Credit Union is committed to building relationships with members that last a lifetime and generations beyond.  Blue Eagle Credit Union is a member owned, full service, financial cooperative with more than $115 million in assets, as well as two office locations in Roanoke, VA; one office location in Lynchburg, VA; four full service ATMs of their own; a network of surcharge-free ATMs nationwide; and a variety of electronic delivery channels for member service.
