Canvas Credit Union delivers school supplies and smiles
Canvas donates backpacks filled with school supplies to Denver area fifth graders
DENVER, CO (December 5, 2018) — Canvas Credit Union was one of 22 credit unions nationwide to participate in CO-OP Financial Services 2018 Back to School drive, delivering over 1,150 backpacks filled with school supplies to schools in need. The Canvas team volunteered time in October to fill 100 backpacks with necessary learning tools, such as pencils, notebooks, erasers, rulers, and more. The filled packs were then delivered and presented to each fifth grader at Richard T. Castro Elementary School in Denver.

“We hope that these school supplies will be of benefit to the fifth grade students at Castro Elementary,” said Malcolm Johnson, Canvas Credit Union’s Director of Public Relations and Community Involvement. “Something as simple as free school supplies can mean the world to a family that is struggling financially.”
Financial struggles can take a physical toll on students and their families. “It truly is an amazing opportunity that this donation provides,” said Dr. Robert D. Villarreal, the Principal at Castro Elementary School. “Not only to Castro, but to each fifth grader on an individual level.” According to Villarreal, 100% of the students at Castro Elementary School qualify for a free lunch program. Many families have a combined income of only $32,000 a year to support a family of four.
“Our Canvas employees were able to visit Castro Elementary to see, first-hand, the positive impact they are making with the fifth grade students,” said Johnson. “It warmed our hearts to see a smile on the face of each student as they received their new backpack and school supplies, and we are pleased and humbled to support the students and faculty at Castro Elementary.”
