Champion Credit Union Honored for “Share the Warmth” Initiative

RALEIGH, NC (June 19, 2013) The NC Credit Union League honored Champion CU for its community involvement efforts. Champion won the statewide Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award during a recognition banquet at the 78th Annual Meeting of the NC Credit Union League.

The annual Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award recognizes and promotes credit unions’ social responsibility efforts within the communities they serve. Champion won the award in the $100 – $200 million asset category for its commitment to Mountain Projects, Inc. in 2013. Mountain Projects provides heating assistance to families in Haywood & Jackson Counties, among many other services to elderly and disadvantaged people.

Champion issued a challenge grant to the local community to raise $10,000 by the end of February 2013 to provide heating assistance to Mountain Projects’ clients. Champion matched this generous sum and when the campaign was over, more than $30,000 had been raised.

In addition to the credit union’s direct financial support, Champion raised awareness of the campaign through newspaper and television advertisements. These advertisements helped call attention to the need for heating and other forms of assistance in western NC.

Champion Credit Union will now compete for the nationwide Dora Maxwell Award in its asset category. Winners will be announced by the Credit Union National Association late this year.

The North Carolina Credit Union League is the state trade association for the nearly 90 NC credit unions. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions that are owned and controlled by their members. More than 3.3 million people in NC are members of a credit union.
