Consumers Credit Union Nothing Bundt Cakes walk aims to again break World Record, impact child hunger

Consumers Credit Union and Nothing Bundt Cakes to Host World’s Largest Cake Walk for a Cause on Sept. 23

Consumers Credit Union, a full-service financial institution and a leader in digital banking technology, mortgages and business lending, together with Nothing Bundt Cakes, America’s favorite bundt cake, will bring the Grand Rapids community together on Sept. 23 at 2:00 p.m. to break the Guinness World Record for the “largest cake walk.” Proceeds from the walk will benefit Kids' Food Basket, a Michigan-based nonprofit organization that empowers communities to attack childhood hunger.

The cake walk entails participants walking around a path of squares in time to music, which plays for a duration and then stops. A number is then called out, and the person standing on the square with that number wins a prize. The Nothing Bundt Cakes Walk aims to break its previous record of 380 participants by bringing 500 people to Ah-Nab-Awen Park during ArtPrize, an open, independently organized international art competition and festival. The groups hope to raise $5,000, which will help ensure thousands of local children receive their Sack Supper.

"As a community driven organization, we absolutely couldn't provide our programming without the support of community partners like Consumers Credit Union and Nothing Bundt Cakes,” said Bridget Clark Whitney, executive director of Kids' Food Basket. “We're so grateful for their support and commitment to our community's kids."

After opening the first Nothing Bundt Cakes location in Michigan in March 2017, bakery owners Scott and Christine Vogel sought community partners that shared their passion for bettering the local community. They were soon introduced to Consumers Credit Union, an organization already active in the Grand Rapids community. Together, the two organizations decided to host an event benefitting Kids’ Food Basket, knowing one in five Michigan children is affected by hunger.

“From the day we opened our bakery doors we have been committed to having a positive impact on the community we call home and bringing joy to those around us,” said Scott Vogel, owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes Grand Rapids. “Consumers Credit Union shares this goal and we are happy to partner with them to attack child hunger.”

“One of the pillars of our business is to make our community better,” said Lynne Jarman-Johnson, chief marketing officer of Consumers Credit Union. “We are delighted to have found a partner to help us have an even deeper impact in Grand Rapids, and we hope everyone will reserve a spot to participate to make an impact on child hunger.”

With the event just around the corner, registrations are now being accepted at www.consumerscu.org/cakewalk. While there is no fee to participate, attendees are encouraged to make a donation at the event or bring an item from Kids’ Food Basket’s Wish List. Some creative folks from Consumers, Nothing Bundt Cakes and Kids’ Food Basket have also teamed up to create a piece that will be included in this year’s ArtPrize competition. Evolution, by team #CaptureAHealthyFuture, is an interactive fundraising piece that will showcase the evolution of payments and the evolution of foods we need to thrive as we grow. The intersection of poverty, hunger, financial wellness and healthy nutrition will be showcased. The piece strives to inspire, educate and help the community take action against hunger, and can be seen at Ionia and Fulton in front of Craft Revival Jewelers.
