CUES Names 2013 Exceptional Leader Award Recipient

MADISON, WI (July 29, 2013) — The Credit Union Executives Society is pleased to announce William “Willy” K. Kelsey, CSE, CCE, EVP/Chief Operations Officer, Texas Trust Credit Union, Mansfield, Texas, as its 2013 CUES Exceptional Leader award winner. He will be honored at CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network, Nov. 3-6, at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, in San Diego.

Among the many accomplishments during his 24-year career, Kelsey headed efforts to restructure the mortgage department at Texas Trust. That restructuring enabled Texas Trust to achieve record mortgage loan production; in 2012, the Dallas Business Journal ranked Texas Trust as the 16th largest overall mortgage lender in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, and the top credit union mortgage lender based on 2011 results.

Kelsey was also instrumental in restructuring the business department at Texas Trust, refocusing efforts on growing depository functions and changing the lending philosophy to cultivate a more friendly business lending environment. These improvements resulted in a 23.9 percent growth rate in 2012.

He also led the reorganization of branch operations and spearheaded the strategic development process at Texas Trust, and increased efficiency and reduced loan processing time by 54 percent in the direct lending program at his former credit union.

“In addition to having earned the Certified Chief Executive (CCE) designation by completing CEO Institute, Willy was recognized in the inaugural CUES Rising 100 program in 2006,” said Chuck Fagan, CUES’ president/CEO. “He had great potential, and has achieved a tremendous amount since then.”

The CUES Exceptional Leader award acknowledges decision-makers for their ambition, participation and devotion to their credit union and the movement. Nominees are evaluated on their accomplishments within their credit union and the movement; contributions made to CUES and its Councils; ongoing professional development; a letter of recommendation from their CEO; and community contributions. Additionally, the judges review the nominees’ leadership goals and problem-solving abilities.
