Democracy Federal Credit Union hosts 2015 Annual Meeting and Financial Fitness Fair

WASHINGTON, DC (May 18, 2015) — On April 30, 2015 Democracy Federal Credit Union hosted its 79th Annual Business Meeting and Financial Fitness Fair inside The Great Hall – Hubert H. Humphrey Building, Washington DC. In attendance were Democracy FCU’s volunteer Board of Directors, members and Democracy staff. The Annual meeting brings together members and credit union leadership, to review the Credit Union’s business and the latest Credit union strategic initiatives.

The meeting was led by Board Chairman Mrs. Patricia Ellis. During her presentation, Mrs. Ellis stated, “On January 1, 2015 when we became Democracy FCU we began a new chapter in our storied history. While our name is new, we bring the best of our past with us: that is the unwavering commitment to help our member-owners achieve financial freedom. We still exist solely to serve our member-owners. That will never change.”

This year’s Annual Meeting, the first since unveiling its name change to Democracy FCU, introduced a new format to the annual business meeting. Following the review of the Credit Union’s performance, there were several guest speakers and a “Financial Fair”. The featured keynote speaker, Michelle Singletary, author, Washington Post Columnist and Financial Empowerment Speaker, focused on educating attendees on the value of saving, budgeting and taking advantage of the different services and products the credit union offers.

Ms. Singletary offered 5 tips for being financial fit: Be frugal, Be purposeful with your money, Be careful with your credit, Be an informed investor and Be content. She also shared her personal story of being a Credit Union member. Ms. Singletary’s message resonated very well with the audience and the programs and services offered by Democracy FCU. During the Financial Fair members visited with Credit Union staff, learned about its services and set up appointments with Democracy’s Financial Counselor.

Democracy Federal Credit Union serves members from branches in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. The credit union’s members work for US Government agencies, other major employers, and/or reside in underserved areas throughout the Washington Metropolitan area.
