Desert Schools announces eleventh annual scholarship program to assist Valley Students

2015 Plan Exemplifies Credit Union’s Commitment to Aid Likeminded, Philanthropic Students

PHOENIX, AZ (February 12, 2015) — Desert Schools Federal Credit Union recently announced its eleventh annual Community Service Scholarship Program to reward outstanding local high school seniors who have made noteworthy charitable contributions to their communities over the past year.

In all, six Desert Schools Community Service Scholarships will be granted totaling $25,000, including a grand prize $10,000 scholarship, followed by one $5,000 scholarship and four $2,500 scholarships for students to further their educations.

“In our 76 years as the largest not-for-profit membership-based financial institution in the state of Arizona, Desert Schools has never stopped looking for ways to give back to the community,” said Susan Frank, CEO of Desert Schools. “A good college education comes with a substantial price tag that many of our youth simply cannot afford. We are elated to support fellow philanthropists who choose to further their educations and follow their dreams.”

Students interested in obtaining one of Desert Schools’ Community Service Scholarships have until March 6, 2015 to complete and mail the required application packet. Those who wish to be considered for an award must have performed 50 or more hours of official volunteer service between the dates of January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014. Additional conditions require that the applicant maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be an active account holder, or family member of an account holder at Desert Schools Federal Credit Union.

Desert Schools eagerly seeks ways to assist individuals and their families throughout Arizona in hopes of providing opportunities to those who otherwise may not be so fortunate. It is Desert Schools’ mission to give back to the community through partnerships, volunteer work and by joining forces with non-profit organizations who strive to create better lives for Arizonans. In fact, to commemorate its 75th anniversary in 2014, Desert Schools set a goal of giving 1 million dollars back to the community through its ground-breaking Shine On program, but nearly doubled that figure with an unbelievably generous $1,750,190 contribution to 27 Valley non-profit programs throughout last year.

The $25,000 in scholarships will be yet another way Desert Schools makes an impact on Arizona residents.
