EMV, interchange remain top concerns for US ATM deployers

SIOUX FALLS, SD (February 18, 2015) — While EMV migration and interchange are still top concerns for independent ATM deployers (IAD), results from the 2015 US IAD Survey showed a few surprises – including a significant increase of IADs upgrading/replacing ATMs in the field with EMV capable card readers.

Co-sponsored by the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) and Kahuna ATM Solutions, the survey results were announced Wednesday, February 18 during the 2015 ATMIA US Conference and Expo at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas during a panel discussion addressing top ATM industry concerns.

Survey highlights:

  • 50.46 percent of respondents cited EMV operational expenses as their top concern regarding the health of the ATM industry closely followed by reductions in interchange (48.62 percent) and anti-money laundering rules (31.19 percent).**
  • When asked about specific US-based issues, 40.57 percent responded they would most like to learn more about the “Implications of the EMV Liability Shift for ATMs” while 33.02 percent noted “Costs in Upgrading ATMs” as their preferred topic.**
  • 74.53 percent of US-based IAD respondents are purchasing new ATMs with EMV card readers and 50 percent are already placing ATMs with EMV-capable card readers in the field.
  • 31.13 percent of survey participants anticipate being EMV-ready by the October 2016 MasterCard liability shift while 50 percent anticipate meeting the October 2017 date set by Visa.
  • Only 11.65 percent of those surveyed indicated they are developing contactless or mobile strategies for the ATM, down from 34.7 percent in 2014. However, only 37.89 percent stated a solid no this year vs. 50 percent indicating they were not planning to develop a contactless strategy last year.

**Multiple choice question. Each respondent was allowed to choose three answers.

“The US Independent ATM Deployer Survey plays a strategic role in helping us plan our educational goals and sessions for the coming year,” noted David Tente, US executive director for ATMIA. “The response this year was especially encouraging, informative and helpful in helping us move forward with the best possible content for 2015.”

“We know there are still a lot of concerns regarding EMV migration and interchange,” says Bryan Bauer, vice president and general manager, Kahuna ATM Solutions. “Our clients are asking a lot of questions about EMV requirements and obtaining capital for migration requirements, and looking for alternatives and solutions that will best fit their business.

“This survey made it clear that IADs are still unclear on the true impact of the liability shift for ATMs that are not EMV-ready by October 2016,” notes Bauer. “We have an enormous task as an industry to figure out exactly what that impact is through real, meaningful data, and then educating IADs on those implications of not upgrading. Moreover, we need to educate them in time to successfully meet the deadline as an industry.”

One hundred and nine (109) IADs responded to the survey between November 10 and December 31, 2014.
