Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union’s Bill Schirmer receives Professional Achievement Award

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (October 19, 2018) — Bill Schirmer, President/CEO of Evansville Teachers FCU, is the Indiana Credit Union League’s 2018 recipient of the Professional Achievement Award. The presentation was made at the Chairman’s Awards Banquet at the JW Marriott Hotel on October 12 as part of a special event during the League’s statewide convention.

Bill has been in the credit union business since 1990, and CEO of his credit union since 2012 during which time the credit union has surpassed $1.5 billion in assets and grown to serve more than 200,000 members. A variety of products have been introduced to meet the vast and varying needs of the membership, including Vertical and Platinum Rewards checking accounts, which returned $2.3 million to members who took advantage of them. A major expansion is taking place under Schirmer’s leadership. Recently, the credit union opened an 82,000-square-foot main facility in Evansville as well as branch offices in Washington and Fort Branch Indiana, Bowling Green, Kentucky and Franklin, Tennessee. Additionally, the credit union operates mortgage lending operations under the Liberty Financial brand in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, and it has agreed to acquire American Founders Bank in Louisville.

Schirmer is a member of the League’s Governmental Affairs Committee, making personal connections on behalf of Indiana credit unions with lawmakers at the state and federal levels. He serves at the national level as a member of the Payments Committee for Credit Union National Association and on the Legislative Affairs Committee of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions. He also holds leadership roles with a number of community organizations that work in the credit union’s branch communities. This includes Habitat for Humanity of Evansville, where he is currently chairman, and where employees of Evansville Teachers FCU pledged $85,000 to build a Habitat Home this year. He has also led the credit union to be a top fundraiser for United Way of Evansville; he serves as a board member of the Evansville School Corporation Foundation; he is a board member for Junior Achievement, and he is on the Advisory Council for the University of Southern Indiana.

The Professional Achievement Award recipient is chosen each year from nominees from around the state. Individuals are nominated for their professional accomplishments, their commitment to the credit union movement and the contributions they make to their credit union and community.
