Florence credit union leading consolidated memorial for fallen Florence officers

With the Monday, October 22 passing of another officer shot in the October 3 ambush on law enforcement in Florence, SC, Health Facilities Federal Credit Union (HFFCU) is making a final request for support of a consolidated memorial gift to the City of Florence Police Benevolence Fund.

HFFCU, which has city and county law enforcement and first responders in its field of membership, plans to honor the lives of member and Florence Police Department Sergeant Terrence Carraway and Florence County Investigator Farrah Turner by presenting a check to Florence City Police Chief Allen Heidler—also a member of HFFCU—and Chaplain Sam Turbeville.

Carraway was laid to rest October 8. Services for Turner are scheduled for Sunday, October 28. Two other credit union members injured in the tragic event, Florence County Deputy Arie Davis and Investigator Sarah Miller, were released from the hospital on Friday, October 19.

The passing of Carraway, who had nearly reached his 31-year anniversary with the Florence Police Department, was especially difficult for the Health Facilities family. He was a highly decorated officer and visible 29-year credit union member. HFFCU contributed to his Camp FEVER for at-risk youth, at which Branch Manager Barbara Merrill volunteered. He was readily available to consult on suspected check fraud, regularly escorted staff on cash transports, and joined other officers in helping fingerprint children at numerous “credit union days.” Loan Officer Stephanie McFaddin saw Carraway as a friend and a man of character, grace, and purpose despite his imposing stature.

“He always wore a smile and was always ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or be of service. The way he poured out (himself) into the young people of this community was legendary,” McFaddin recalls. “He wanted to leave things better than he found them. The world will be a different place without Terrence in it, but I think it may be a better place because he was.”
