Georgia United Credit Union Announces 2013 Scholarship Program Recipients

DULUTH, GA (March 28, 2013) – Georgia United Credit Union is excited to announce the winners for their 2013 scholarship programs.  A total of $12,500 was awarded through the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship program and the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship program and disbursed to thirteen high school seniors.  Thanks to all the high school seniors who entered this year’s competition as we had a record number of entries!

This is the 19th year that Georgia United has given the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and the 6th year for the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship. A total of approximately $212,500 has been awarded to high school seniors during the tenure of both programs.  Recipients are chosen based on an essay competition with consideration given to academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in both school and community activities.  The top winners for 2013 were Lindsey Vinson of Westminster Christian Academy in Watkinsville, and Margaret “Meg” Panetta of The Westminster Schools of Atlanta, respectively.

Lindsey Vinson – Watkinsville, GA

Lindsey Michelle Vinson was this year’s first place winner of the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and recipient of $3,000. Already accepted to the University of Georgia, Lindsey is valedictorian of her graduating class, her school’s STAR Student, recipient of the Founders Award and has a 4.0 GPA.   Lindsey is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Captain of the Varsity Girls’ Soccer Team, on the Leadership Team of FCA, and a member of the Mock Trial Team.  A participant in Youth Leadership Oconee, she is also active in her church, First Baptist of Watkinsville.  Lindsey is the daughter of Thomas and Kris Vinson of Watkinsville.

Margaret “Meg” Panetta – Atlanta, GA

Meg Panetta was this year’s first place winner of the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship and recipient of $1,500. Already accepted to Harvard College, Meg is valedictorian of her graduating class and is a National Merit Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a member of her school’s Honor Council. She is a member of the National Honor Society, of the Cum Laude Society, and of the Westminster Academic Quiz Team. She is president of her Science Olympiad Team, plays bass in the school orchestra, and has studied dance for 10 years. An active community volunteer, Meg has also been involved with her church, Immaculate Heart of Mary, and volunteers at Fernbank Science Center. She is the daughter of Dr. Edward Panetta and Ms. Patricia Gorham of Atlanta.
