Georgia United Credit Union invites local schools to apply for a School Crashers Makeover

DULUTH, GA (March 24, 2015) — Georgia United Credit Union (Georgia United) is excited to launch its second annual Georgia United School Crashers (“School Crashers”) makeover contest on March 24, 2015.  Funded by Georgia United, School Crashers helps deserving private or public elementary, middle or high schools repair and/or renovate school grounds and facilities.

One grand prize winner will be selected to receive a large-scale makeover that will require professionals and community volunteers to complete.  Several runners-up will receive grants to apply towards makeover projects.

A team of professional crews and community volunteers complete the repairs and/or renovations on the winning school over a two-day period in the summer before the school year begins.  Anyone—including teachers, students, parents, and school administrators—may nominate a school for a makeover.

In 2014, Chapel Hill Elementary in DeKalb County was selected as the grand prize winner from among 750 applicants across Georgia. Over a two-day period in July 2014, 150 professionals and volunteers installed carpet, painted murals in the cafeteria, repaired playground equipment, installed landscaping, replaced the school’s entrance sign and painted the entrance.   Volunteers also painted safety curbs, spread mulch and pine straw, painted windows, labeled and sorted books in the media center, replaced cafeteria furniture, and assisted teachers with setting up bulletin boards and classrooms.

Georgia United also awarded each of the runners-up makeover grants between $5,000 and $10,000.

The School Crashers contest is just one of the ways Georgia United gives back to local schools and students.  Since the inception of its annual scholarship awards program 22 years ago, Georgia United has awarded a total of $155,000 in college scholarships and rewards student-members twice per year with cash for good grades through its “Pays for A’s” program.

School Crashers nominations must be received by Georgia United between Tuesday, March 24, 2015, and Tuesday, April 21, 2015.  Applications and complete contest rules can be downloaded at www.georgiaunitedcu.org/schoolcrashers.  Completed applications may be submitted online at www.georgiaunitedcu.org/schoolcrashers or mailed to:

Georgia United Credit Union
Attn:  School Crashers
6705 Sugarloaf Parkway
Duluth, GA  30097

An application must be completed in its entirety to be considered, including a 250-word explanation as to why the nominated school deserves a makeover.  Following the application deadline on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, Georgia United officials will review the applicants and inform the winning school.

The winner will be officially announced on Monday, May 11, 2015.
