Helping our future community leaders Credit Union West awards $5,000 to scholarship recipients

GLENDALE, AZ (May 15, 2018) — To help our future community leaders, Credit Union West has announced the five graduating high school seniors who were awarded a $1,000 scholarship each from its 2018 scholarship program.  The winning recipients were required to meet eligibility requirements that included submitting a personal essay about the role personal finance plays in career achievement.

Paying for college is expensive, and many families are feeling the pinch as tuition costs soar. The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2017–2018 school year was $34,699 at private colleges, $9,528 for state residents at public colleges and $21,632 for out-of-state students at state schools, according to data in an annual survey by U.S. News.

The 2018 Credit Union West Scholarship recipients are:

  • Abigail Chartier, Prescott High School
  • Chelsea Clark, Mingus Union High School
  • Donovan Pichon, Thunderbird High School
  • Luke Caporrimo, Verrado High School
  • Tyler Tuckness, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy

“We’re proud of each scholarship winner and are privileged to be able to support their future educational and career goals,” said Bob MacGregor, CEO at Credit Union West. For families with college-bound students, the credit union is committed to helping them reach their financial goals.  “We had many impressive applicants, so it was difficult to select the final winners. With so many bright minds in our community, our economic future will certainly be in good hands.”

Doing their part to give back to our communities, this year was the fifth year Credit Union West has offered the program to Maricopa and Yavapai County students. In 2018, the credit union increased the awarded scholarships to $5,000 from $3,000 in 2017. Two new $1,000 scholarships were reserved for students who participated in their high school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC). The remaining three $1,000 awards were open to all local graduates who met the scholarship requirements.
