Houston Chapter of Credit Unions battles the fight against hunger

HOUSTON, TX (June 1, 2022) — Fewer Houstonians will go hungry due to the efforts of Houston area credit unions. The Houston Chapter of Credit Unions 2022 Food Drive resulted in a donation of over 1,400 pounds of food for the Houston Food Bank.

With children out of school this summer and the continued impact from Houston heat, the food bank is in high demand to replenish inventories. Food levels generally run low during the summer and until the holiday food drives.

This year’s food drive started April 18th and wrapped up at the Houston Chapter of Credit Unions Business Partner Expo on Monday, May 16 th. Collection boxes were provided to credit unions and the final collection site was at Minute Maid Park during the Business Partner Expo. The donations were delivered to the Houston Food Bank by a group of volunteers on May 17th. Coordinating HCCU Board member Valarie Prillman, VP HR at Cy-Fair FCU, announces “a special shout out to Willie Porter, AVP Houston Police CU, for leading the donations with the most food items donated and thank you to both Kanika Boutte, President/CEO at Energy Capital CU and Willie Porter for loaning your trucks and transporting the food to the Houston Food Bank.” She also thanks Kanika for coordinating the volunteers.

The Annual Food Drive is one of many efforts in which the Chapter supports the community and enhances the quality of life in the Greater Houston Area. The Houston Chapter of Credit Unions provides a collaborative environment for credit union professionals and volunteers to receive education, leadership development, and grow credit union community influence. The Houston Chapter is comprised of approximately 100 credit unions in the Houston metropolitan area.
