Hurricane Dorian relief, call to action for credit unions, others

Worst natural disaster in Bahamanian history causes downed infrastructure, water/shelter shortage; Portland-based credit union partners with World Council to raise relief funds

In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, thousands of people and families in The Bahamas have been displaced without shelter or water.

Unitus is partnering with the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions, a fundraising arm of the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), taking direct initiative to raise funds to help alleviate the damage Hurricane Dorian has caused to communities.

In addition to circulating a video on social media to help procure donations from the public, Unitus is actively inviting members to “Be the Change” and make donations at their local Unitus branch or through their website: unitusccu.com.

“It’s heartbreaking to witness what’s happened to the Grand Bahamas and Abaco Islands,” said Unitus President/CEO Steven Stapp. “Seeing the beauty just months ago and now the photos after the hurricane, it’s unrecognizable.”

In July 2019, Unitus sent a group of employees to The Bahamas to represent the credit union at the World Credit Union Conference (WCUC), a gathering of more than 2,100 credit union professionals from across the globe. The conference, held at Atlantis Bahamas, showcased more than 50 speakers, including Stapp who currently serves as Chair of the WOCCU Board.

“We’ve been hearing updates from our credit union friends overseas and the clear message is that something has to be done,” added Stapp. “We all need to do our part.”
