Innovations Federal Credit Union hosts Mad City Money at Rutherford High School

PANAMA CITY, FL (May 29, 2013) Innovations Federal Credit Union hosted their third Mad City Money financial simulation at Rutherford High School on May 23rd to help teach kids about the importance of financial budgeting.

During the simulation, students were given a mock identity with an occupation, salary, spouse, child, student loan debt, credit card debt and medical insurance payments. Students then visited merchants, played by members of the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce, to purchase housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care and other needs.

This partnership between Innovations Federal Credit Union and the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce allows high-school students to learn basic money management in a safe, fun setting that they are familiar with.

“I thought it was very fun and a really realistic way to budget money,” said Curstin Taylor, a sophomore at Rutherford High School.

Other Mad City Money workshops were held earlier this year at Deane Bozeman High School and Arnold High School.

“By using this program, students stay engaged in learning and experience what it is like to be financially responsible,” said Lisa Adams, Chair of the Education Partnership Committee.

Around 30 to 40 students participated in the unique event at Rutherford High School. Innovations Federal Credit Union and the Education Partnership Committee are hoping to visit more Bay County high schools next year.

“Let’s face it—a PowerPoint presentation on budgeting will put teens to sleep,” said David Southall, President/CEO of Innovations. “The Mad City Money simulation is fun and keeps the students engaged.”
