Kansas City credit unions Unite for Good on Facebook

KANSAS CITY, MO (October 4, 2013) — Mazuma Credit Union is taking this year’s International Credit Union Day to a new level by uniting with Kansas City credit unions to lend a big hand in the local community. Together, the credit unions are hosting an innovative Facebook sweepstakes, where they will give away $2,000 to one of three Kansas City organizations. It will also include a random drawing for a matching $2,000 to a meaningful cause of one individual’s choice.

The Sweepstakes, which is open to voting by the general public, began on October 1and culminates on International Credit Union Day, October 17.

“We wanted to do more than lip service and something that would really show the cooperative spirit of credit unions,” Mazuma brand manager Andy Dickhut said. “This allows us to do it in a unique way that everyone can take part in.”

In the spirit of this year’s ICU Day theme, “Unite for Good,” Mazuma chose to take a literal approach by reaching out to its credit union neighbors CommunityAmerica, United Consumers and Kansas City Credit Union.

By joining forces, the credit unions were able to maximize their impact in the Kansas City community, giving $2,000 to one of three local organizations – Junior Achievement of Middle America, Down Syndrome Guild of Kansas City or Great Plains SPCA. In addition, the credit unions will select one individual to receive $2,000 to the cause of his or her choice.

Banding together also helps guarantee that the initiative will reach a large audience on social media. Together, the credit unions tally over 8,000 fans of their official Facebook pages.

“Facebook is all about connecting with a community of people who share similar interests,” Dickhut said. “We’re all interested in doing good, so turning to social media for this idea was a natural fit.”

To vote, interested parties can go to any of the participating credit unions’ official Facebook pages. Once there, users must “like” the Facebook page to be eligible to vote. They will then be directed to the vote page, where they can select the organization they’d like to win and fill out the submission form to be eligible to receive $2,000 for the cause of their choice. To vote from a mobile device, participants can go to woobox.com/q7ycw6.

Votes may be cast every day through Oct. 17, and winners will be announced shortly thereafter.
