Louisiana Credit Unions celebrate hometown businesses with ‘CU Lunch Local’ program

Initiative gives back more than $150,000 since it's inception

HARAHAN, LA (November 5, 2019) — Louisiana credit unions joined forces and put their money where their mouth is – by buying breakfast, lunch and other treats ‘cash mob’-style from local businesses. Instead of dancing in the streets, credit union employees spent money where it matters during the 7th Annual CU Lunch Local event.

The event took place during 2019 International Credit Union Week, October 14-18. Credit union employees shopped local as part of a statewide initiative supporting local businesses while sharing information on what makes credit unions different.

The Louisiana Credit Union League (LCUL) – the trade association representing credit unions statewide and driver behind the initiative- also showed their support by participating. Bob Gallman, LCUL President/CEO, said: “Individually, credit unions are doing amazing things. Collectively, working together to give back to the communities we serve, that’s what sets us apart from other financial institutions. CU Lunch Local is an opportunity to show our commitment to their success and support the communities we serve.”

This year, credit unions collectively spent more than $30,000 dining at local restaurants. Since LCUL launched CU Lunch Local, Louisiana credit unions have given back more than $150,000 to local, small businesses.

Dozens of Louisiana credit unions took the celebration to new heights in 2019. The staff of Ascension Credit Union dedicated the week to performing random acts of kindness throughout the community. On Columbus Day, 25 staff members went to Cara’s House, the parish animal shelter to help with cleanup of the facility. As the week progressed, so did the credit union’s generosity: the credit union purchased lunch for over 85 diners on Tuesday, staff arrived at a local donut shop at 6:30am and bought donuts for all on Wednesday, and on Thursday, delivered lunch from the Jambalaya Shoppe (local) to the Sheriff’s office.

Other credit unions in Louisiana also celebrating local businesses as part of CU Lunch Local include: Access of LA FCU, Ascension CU, BRECO FCU, Campus FCU, Carter FCU, Centric FCU, Coast Guard ECU, EFCU Financial, Engage, First Pioneers, GNO FCU, Jefferson Financial FCU, La Capitol FCU, LES FCU, Meritus CU, NAS JRB, NODA FCU, Pelican State CU, Post Office ECU, Rapides General Hospital EFCU, Southwest LA CU, University of LA FCU, and Valex FCU.
